WSOC-TV presents Devan Robbins with Player of Year trophy

BELMONT, N.C. — The entire South Point student body filled the stadium Thursday as WSOC-TV's Channel 9 sports director Tiffany Wright approached in Chopper 9 and landed to present this season's Big 22 Player of the Year Award, sponsored by OrthoCarolina.

It was a welcome like no other, with Red Raiders out in full force to show their support for winner Devan Robbins, who admits he was at a loss for words seeing all the support from his community.

"It's very special. I mean, I don't know how it feels right now. It will hit me later. It's very special," Robbins said.

"It means so much to us to see all the hard work that Devan puts forth, come to fruition like this ... because he is a hard worker," said Charlene Robbins, Devan Robbins' mother.

Thanks to sponsor OrthoCarolina matching WSOC-TV's donation of $5000, South Point received $10,000 for the school's scholarship fund.

"It's a tremendous amount of money that is going to help some kids further their education and make a better life for themselves," said Coach Mickey Lineberger. "Hopefully, they'll come back here and have more and more Red Raiders."
