Charlotte Store Recycling And Helping The Less Fortunate

A local charity already known for helping families is also helping keep trash out of landfills.

Tim Liner shops at the Habitat Restore on Wendover Road in Charlotte.

“I come in from time to time looking for things that might fit in my home,” he said.

All the items were donated to raise money for Habitat for Humanity to build new homes for families. At the same time, the items are being recycled and reused.

Tim Murphy is the donation manager at the Restore. “Everything that comes in here is stuff that would have gone to the landfill or be destroyed,” he said.

He said their two locations in Charlotte divert about 2,000 tons of garbage every year from our landfills. But they also recycle what they can’t sell.

And two months ago, they started a new program, tearing recyclable parts out of appliances that cannot be resold.

One location has a bookstore. If they get books that are too damaged to put on the shelves, they sell them to a company that shreds them to make insulation for homes.

The Habitat Restore also has a team that will tear out usable items like sinks tubs and cabinets in homes to will be remodeled or demolished. They resell them in their store.
