Capriati Withdraws From Australian Open

Melbourne, Australia -- Jennifer Capriati won't get a chance
to redeem her disappointing outing at last year's Australian Open. The two-time champion, who fell to Marlene Weingartner in last year's opening
round, withdrew from the season's first Grand Slam on Tuesday because of a
back injury she sustained in November's WTA Championships. Capriati, who won the Open in 2001 and 2002, was the first defending champion
ever to lose in the first round when Weingartner beat her in three sets. Currently ranked sixth in the world, Capriati isn't the only top name that
will be absent from this year's draw when the tournament kicks off January 19
at
Melbourne Park. Other notables to withdraw include 2003 champion Serena Williams and 1995
titlist Mary Pierce, who also reached the final here in 1997.
