Alternate Routes from Traffic Team 9 for construction projects and special events

UPTOWN FIREWORKS -- STREET CLOSURES (Friday) -- The Red, White, and BOOM fireworks display will close 4 streets near Uptown Charlotte on Friday evening.  Streets will close around 8:30 p.m. and reopen around 10 p.m.

  • Charlottetowne Ave. will be closed between 3rd St. and 5th St. from 8:30 p.m. through 10 p.m.  Use Kings Dr. or Hawthorne Ln. as alternate routes between 7th St. and 3rd St.  Traffic coming from the Independence Freeway should use John Belk Freeway to the 3rd St. exit as an alternate route.
  • The 3rd St./4th St. Connector will be closed between Charlottetowne Ave. and Kings Dr. from 8:30 p.m. through 10 p.m.  Use Charlottetowne Ave. (left) to Stonewall St. (right) to McDowell St. (right), or use Hawthorne Ln. (right) to 7th St. (left) to Kings Dr. (left) as alternate routes into Uptown Charlotte.
  • 4th St. will be closed from Torrence St. to Kings Dr. from 8:30 p.m. through 10 p.m.  Use Hawthorne Ln. (right) to 7th St. (left) to King Dr. (right) as an alternate route.
  • Elizabeth Ave. will be closed between Torrence St. and Kings Dr. from 8:30 p.m. through 10 p.m.  Use 7th St. as an alternate route between Hawthorne Ln., Charlottetowne Ave., and Kings Dr. 

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY CLOSURE (near Boone and Blowing Rock) -- The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed between Highway 321 and Highway 421 near Boone and Blowing Rock for replacement of a bridge.  Use Highway 321 northbound (toward Boone) to Deerfield Rd. (near the Watauga Medical Center) to Bamboo Rd. as an alternate route.  The 8 mile detour is marked.  This does not impact the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Moses Cone Estate, Linn Cove Viaduct, or Grandfather Mountain.

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY CLOSURE (near Mount Mitchell) -- The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed between Mt. Mitchell and the Craggy Gardens area due to a rockslide and significant road damage.  Use I-40 to US 70 to NC 80 as an alternate route between the Asheville area and the Mt. Mitchell area.

SOUTH BLVD. DELAYS (through late July) -- The right lane of inbound South Blvd. is CLOSED at I-277 due to a damaged culvert beneath the roadway.  Crews expect repairs to continue through late July.  Use East Blvd./West Blvd. to South Tryon St., or use I-77, as alternate routes into Uptown Charlotte.

FIRST STREET CLOSED (through late 2008) -- The westbound lanes of First Street will be closed between Church St. and Mint St. for the remainder of 2008.  This is to allow more room for crews working on nearby construction projects.  Use Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to Mint St., or use Church St. to Stonewall St. to Mint St., as alternate routes.

HIGHWAY 321 DELAYS (Gaston County) -- NCDOT has started a repaving project on Highway 321 between the Gaston/Lincoln county line and Gastonia.  Initially, crews are expected to be working in the southbound lanes near High Shoals.  Expect delays starting at 7 a.m. each day and continuing through mid-afternoon.  Use Business 321 as an alternate route between High Shoals and Dallas.

SOUTH BLVD. RAMP TO I-277 NORTH CLOSED (through July) -- The ramp from inbound South Blvd. onto northbound I-277 (heading toward Independence Blvd.) will be closed through July.  Crews are rebuilding the interchange as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame project.  Use East Blvd. to Scott Ave. to Kenilworth Ave. (through Dilworth), or use South Blvd. to Caldwell St. to 3rd St. (through Uptown), as alternate routes onto northbound I-277.

1-277/CALDWELL ST. EXIT CLOSED (through July) -- The exit ramp from I-277 North onto Caldwell St. will be closed through July.  Crews are rebuilding the interchange as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame project.  Use the College St. exit (one exit early) as an alternate route into Uptown Charlotte.

SOUTH BLVD. RAMP TO I-277 SOUTH CLOSED (through November) -- The ramp from inbound South Blvd. onto southbound I-277 (traveling toward I-77) will be closed through November. Crews are rebuilding the interchange as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame project. Use South Blvd. to Stonewall St. (left) to Brevard St. (left) to access I-277 southbound.

I-277 RAMP TO SOUTH BLVD. CLOSED (through November) -- The ramp from southbound I-277 (heading toward I-77) onto outbound South Blvd. will be closed through November. Crews are rebuilding the interchange as part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame project. Use the Stonewall St. exit (left) to South Blvd. as an alternate route.

ELIZABETH AVE. CLOSED (through October 1st 2008) -- Elizabeth Ave. will be closed between Kings Dr. and Charlottetowne Ave. through October 1st, 2008. Crews are making major upgrades to the roadway and infrastructure. Use 3rd St./4th St. as alternate routes between Kings Dr. and Charlottetowne Ave.

HIGHWAY 321 DELAYS (throughout 2008) -- Expect major delays on Highway 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock as crews widen the road. Highway 321 will frequently be down to one lane with flaggers alternating traffic. On many Tuesdays and Thursdays, Highway 321 will be closed from noon through 2 p.m. From Charlotte, use I-77 North to Highway 421 North as an alternate route to the Boone/Blowing Rock area. From Lenoir, use Highway 64 to Highway 181 to Highway 221, or Highway 18 to Highway 421 as alternate routes to the Boone/Blowing Rock area.

SOUTH TRYON ST. DAYTIME DELAYS (through Fall 2009) -- South Tryon St. has been reduced to one lane in each direction between John Belk Freeway and 2nd St. due to construction at the Wachovia First Street project. Traffic will remain in this pattern through the fall of 2009. Use Church St. or College St. as alternate routes.
