Potential street closures for DNC

It's what everyone wants to know, but it's also one of Charlotte's best kept secrets.  Which streets will be closed during the Democratic National Convention?

The official security plan hasn't been released, but the Charlotte Area Transit System's plans for rerouting buses during the DNC provides some clues for which roads might be closed.

Based on the maps from CATS, Traffic Team 9 expects the following streets to be blocked between I-277 and Tryon St.:

  • Stonewall St.
  • Martin Luther King Blvd.
  • 3rd St.
  • 4th St.
  • Trade St.
  • 5th St.
  • 6th St.
  • 7th St.

In addition, based on the CATS maps, Traffic Team 9 expects the following streets to be blocked between John Belk Freeway and 7th St.:

  • McDowell St.
  • Davidson St.
  • Caldwell St.
  • Brevard St.

While traffic will likely be blocked near the Government Center, courthouse, NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Time Warner Cable Arena, it appears Tryon St. and Church St. will remain open in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, as well as most streets in 3rd Ward (near Bank of America Stadium) and 4th Ward.  For workers trying to get into Uptown, it appears that I-77 to Trade St./Exit 10 or I-77 to Morehead St./Exit 10 are the routes most likely to remain open.

It's important to remember that these are educated guesses made by studying multiple maps from the Charlotte Area Transit System.  The official plan from the Secret Service, expected to be released within the next week, will provide a more detailed and accurate look at which roads will be closed during the Democratic National Convention.
