Borg Attack At Hilton

T.I. Trims 'Sirens' Show

Updated: 10:34 a.m. EST March 15, 2004

Aiigh, Borg!

That's the hoped-for reaction at the big opening this week of the Borg Invasion 4D attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton, part of an expanded Star Trek: The Experience facility. Pardon my stunning lack of "Star Trek" knowledge, but apparently the Borg are intergalactic bad guys. This new attraction mixes high-tech special effects, 3-D movie technology and live actors to give visitors the visceral thrill of being chased by a few of them.

The original Klingon Encounter part of the attraction will still be there, so you can do one or both starting March 18. The cost, at least for the first few weeks, is $30 for a dual-pass ticket. For more information visit StarTrekExp.com.

I got so many e-mails regarding my review of the Sirens of T.I. show a couple of weeks ago I lost track of them all. Interestingly, almost every single one of them agreed wholeheartedly with my F grade of the show, especially since other Web sites merely regurgitate press department fluff and call the show exciting or sexy. No, you're going to get opinion from my Vegas4Visitors.com, and I'm not afraid to tell you what I think of things.

The only people who didn't agree with me were some folks associated with the show somehow (although they left their exact affiliation unmentioned), who wrote to say I was being unfair. To that person who used a fake e-mail address I will say this: "Bleah."

Just days after my review ran nationwide, the T.I. announced it was trimming six minutes from the 24-minute long show. Trim another 18 or so and you'll fix the whole thing.

Reports are flying fast and furious about Roy Horn's "miraculous" progress in his recovery from a tiger mauling last October. Half of the illusionist duo Siegfried and Roy, Horn has been reported in both local and international papers to be walking (with the aid of wheeled device), talking, and eating -- things that were considered unimaginable after his horrific injuries. Whether or not the reports are true or accurate is still in question, since Horn has not appeared in public since the incident. Some are suggesting it is part of a media hype blitz to reassure a nervous NBC, the network planning to carry a primetime animated series called "Father of the Pride" this fall based on the Siegfried and Roy menagerie.

Speaking of illusionists, the Golden Nugget quietly and quickly pulled the plug on the Amazing Johnathan, just weeks after his show had reopened there. The shock-and-awe comedy magician played the Nugget successfully in 2002 then moved his show to the Flamingo for a very unhappy year, according to most sources.

Johnathan says the new owners of the Golden Nugget don't want him around and deliberately tried to sabotage the first few weeks of his show so they could take advantage of an out clause in his contract. He plans to sue, of course.

The owners of the Nugget would not comment, other than to say the show had produced disappointing results and they decided to exercise their option to bring in something else. That something else is "Spirit of the Dance," an Irish-jig dancing extravaganza that played the theater for much of the year that Johnathan was at the Flamingo.

There's yet another Megabucks millionaire. Beverlee Groves, a 46-year-old from New Mexico spun and won $8 million at the Palms last week on the progressive jackpot slot machine. By the next day, Palms operators were answering phones with the following greeting" "Welcome to the Palms, home of the $8 million Megabucks jackpot winner."

The top jackpot has been reset at $7 million and is growing again.
