Which Holiday Do You Think Is The Best For A Wedding?

“Because it'll make it easy to remember my anniversary.” –Anthony Forner on why he decided to get married on Valentine's Day

Leave it to a guy to be practical even on his wedding day.

Forner and his new wife Katie weren't the only practical people on Thursday, Feb. 14 a.k.a. Valentines Day. Nearly two dozen other couple in Catawba County picked the day to exchange vows and get married at the courthouse.

This is the second season of multiple weddings on Valentine's Day inside the Catawba County Justice Center. Thanks mostly to the passion of the Register of Deeds, Donna Spencer.

"I don't get Valentine's gifts. That's the reason I do this," Spencer said.

The "this" she's talking about is transforming a stuffy government building into a wedding chapel and reception hall for the day. There was a preacher, a floral arch for the couples to stand under, a team of hair and make-up artists, two photographers, wedding cakes, libations, rose petals on the floor and a portable CD player loaded with the Wedding March.

All of this is spread out in the justice center between the metal detectors and the soda machines in the break room.

"It's a day of love, that's why we picked it," said Katie Forner, whose answer was much less practical than her husband's.

The young couple is expecting a baby and wanted to get married but didn't want to spend a lot of money they know they'll need soon.

  • This new Valentine's tradition at the courthouse was a perfect option for them.

All of the decorations are done by volunteers, the cake, a photo and other services are all donated by local businesses. All a couple has to spend is $50 for the state marriage license and $20 for the preacher, for another $10 you can get extra pictures. A complete Valentine's Day wedding for under 100 bucks. What's not to love?

But back to the lady that got this whole thing started, Donna Spencer; why doesn't she get anything for Valentine's Day?

"My husband told me on our first date he's not a romantic," Spencer said. "It's what's in me, so this is the way I go about celebrating Valentines."

So thanks to a non-romantic husband, nearly 50 Catawba County couples have been able to make life-long Valentine's memories in the courthouse in the last two years. It looks like it's working out for everyone involved.
