Winter Storm Expected To Bring Snow Early Evening
Here we go again. And this time, it may be a big one. We are tracking a powerful upper low pressure area that will swing from the Ozarks right through the Deep South and eventually into the Carolinas. This will carry some very cold arctic air that will change a cold rain to a major snow. Here's what we expect: rain that has been fairly steady so far will continue to slow down a little bit and then gather up steam throughout the day. Around midday, people can expect to see a snowy mixture and wet roads in the Charlotte area. By around dinner time, that cold air gets in here and the rain will change to snow. Because it will take time to get road temperatures down, we'll look for accumulation to really start going by the very late evening hours. As far as snow totals are concerned, it is still a little early to determine. This is because this upper low will likely develop a surface low somewhere in the Carolinas. Whatever spot it develops over could stand to get a huge amount of snow. Since we do not know at this time where that low will develop, we will at this point go for a blanket accumulation of 3" to 6" in the Metro area.Charlotte Fire Department Reminds Drivers To Use CautionThe Charlotte Fire Department is reminding people to use caution while driving in severe weather. If a roadway is flooded take an alternate way to your destination.Overnight when the snow begins only travel if absolutely necessary. However if you must travel, it is important to have supplies ready such as a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. In the morning allow for extra time to travel and be very careful as you make you way outside your home, apartment, or work place as ice conditions may have formed resulting in unsafe conditions.
