Kevin from Concord asks: What causes there to be fog over lakes?

Usually we get fog over lakes on calm and clear mornings. When the air is calm (little to no wind) and the sky is clear, the air directly above the water becomes saturated and fog develops.

Now on some mornings, the wind is strong enough to keep the air mixed up and this keeps the fog at bay. When the air is moving, the fog usually doesn't settle into place as easily. Also if the air is extremely dry, even the air directly above the water has a hard time becoming saturated. This is why sometimes you will see fog over lakes and other times you will not.

Scattered showers continue this afternoon but the activity does stay simply a cold rain. A little high country snowfall will pick up again late this afternoon and tonight. Once the moisture moves out this evening (after leaving behind less than a half inch of rain), the colder air returns. On strong northwest winds tomorrow, we will be lucky to get above the upper 30s. At least the sunshine is back tomorrow and we will need it because the chilly air will last all week. This winter continues to march toward the record books as one of the coldest in Charlotte history!

Today: Scattered showers move in through the day. Highs top out near 40 degrees. Rainfall total of less than a half inch.
Tonight: While the metro dries out, the mountains will see snow pick up in intensity. Lows in the mid 20s.
Wednesday: Sunshine returns but so do very strong winds gusting over 40 mph. Highs in the upper 30s.
Thursday: Sunny skies but remaining quite cold with highs again barely near 40 degrees.
Friday: Partly cloudy skies with a few flurries possible early. Highs in the lower 40s.
Saturday: Another dose of cold air: sunny but chilly with highs around 40.
