Steve's Sun Safety

Steve's Sun Safety WSOC-TV Charlotte
Almost everyone loves to get out and feel the warmth of the sun, right? Well, just two bad sunburns tremendously increase your risk for skin cancer.

I had my own brush with skin cancer in 2005. It was a scary moment for my family and me. While my skin cancer was not the more dangerous and potentially fatal melanoma type, I did have to have it removed and get treatment.

Now it’s my goal to educate people about sun safety. In my weathercasts on Channel 9 and in public appearances I have the opportunity to tell people how and why they should protect themselves from the sun’s damaging rays. We wanted to make information available here on wsoctv.com too, so we’ve put together Sun Safety Facts. Please read them and share them with your loved ones.

You don’t have to fear the sun, but you have to respect the damage it can do. Get the facts about sun safety.

Thanks for visiting wsoctv.com! Click here for more skin cancer information from the American Cancer Society.

Severe Weather Team 9 Detailed Forecast By
John Ahrens
Meteorologist John Ahrens
Meteorologist Profile

This holiday weekend is shaping up to be a perfect one! We're in a pretty desperate need for rain but no one wants that during fireworks time! The timing is great: it looks like we'll get some of that rain going by Sunday afternoon. After a potentially wet drive back to work on Monday, we're going to look for a return to muggy weather!
Through this evening: Enjoy the Fourth of July festivities with ease! Lows will drop to the middle 60s.
Tomorrow: Rain develops in the area by the afternoon hours. Some of us will see a thunderstorm. Highs in the middle 80s.
Monday: A round of rain in the early hours of the day. We'll dry out later on and heat up to the middle 80s.
Tuesday: Partly cloudy and hot with highs in the upper 80s.
Wednesday: Partly sunny with a return to "July heat"; we'll top off around 90.
Thursday: Hot and humid with only a few thunderstorms around to cool you off. Highs around 90.
