HOLIDAY FORECAST: Heat, storms threaten the Carolinas

As we head into the upcoming holiday weekend, unsettled weather may threaten some of your Fourth of July plans. Check out the list of a few local events, as well as the daily forecast in the Carolinas.

Friday, July 1

Friday morning will start off with mostly cloudy conditions as temperatures begin in the lower 70s. A few breaks of sun will start to develop by the midday hours, with a mostly sunny sky expected by the afternoon. Highs Friday will hit the lower 90s, with a heat index closer to the mid-90s. One or two showers will be possible across the Carolinas during the afternoon and evening hours, though majority of the region will stay dry.

Saturday, July 2

Conditions will be quiet to start the day on Saturday, with a mainly clear sky and morning temperatures in the lower 70s. Saturday looks to be the hottest day of the holiday weekend, with highs building into the lower 90s by the afternoon. A few isolated showers will be possible for the mountains and foothills during the midday hours, with a couple showers moving into the Charlotte metro area during the afternoon. Temperatures will dip into the upper 80s with the chance for showers diminishing by the overnight hours.

Sunday, July 3

Sunday will start with partly cloudy conditions and temperatures in the lower 70s during the morning hours. Thunderstorms will be possible during the afternoon and evening with periods of heavy rain, strong wind and lightning expected. Make sure to keep an eye to the sky during the second half of the day, as strong storms will be possible. Scattered showers will continue through the evening hours, with storms diminishing after midnight.

Monday, July 4

Clouds and a lingering shower or two may still be around to start the day on Monday with temperatures in the 70-80s. Highs on Monday afternoon will hit near 90 degrees, with a heat index closer to the mid-90s. Scattered thunderstorms will develop during the midday and afternoon hours. Although the overall severe weather threat is low, storms will still be capable of producing strong winds, heavy rain, lightning and small hail.
