Steve's Sun Safety

Steve's Sun Safety WSOC-TV Charlotte
Almost everyone loves to get out and feel the warmth of the sun, right? Well, just two bad sunburns tremendously increase your risk for skin cancer.

I had my own brush with skin cancer in 2005. It was a scary moment for my family and me. While my skin cancer was not the more dangerous and potentially fatal melanoma type, I did have to have it removed and get treatment.

Now it’s my goal to educate people about sun safety. In my weathercasts on Channel 9 and in public appearances I have the opportunity to tell people how and why they should protect themselves from the sun’s damaging rays. We wanted to make information available here on wsoctv.com too, so we’ve put together Sun Safety Facts. Please read them and share them with your loved ones.

You don’t have to fear the sun, but you have to respect the damage it can do. Get the facts about sun safety.

Thanks for visiting wsoctv.com! Click here for more skin cancer information from the American Cancer Society.

Meteorologist Profile

Our Fourth of July has started off beautifully with sunshine and we will keep it all day today. Temperatures will only warm to the mid to upper 80s this afternoon with continued lower humidity. I don't see any problems for fireworks displays this evening so get out there and enjoy. Big changes are coming our way tomorrow with scattered showers and thunderstorms. A few stronger storms are possible if we get a decent amount of sunshine. Something we'll be watching.
Independence Day: Morning sunshine gives way to gathering high clouds during the afternoon, as we warm into the upper 80s.
Tonight: Partly cloudy and comfortable for outdoor plans. Temps will fall to the mid 70s this evening and eventually the mid 60s overnight.
Sunday: The cold front touches off showers and t-storms at about any time, with highs in the low to mid 80s. A few storms may be on the stronger side.
Monday: The front settles to our south, but close enough that we'll see a 20% chance of rain (higher south of Charlotte). Afternoon highs will rise to the mid to upper 80s.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Partly sunny with a return to "July heat"; we'll top off around 90.
