TRACKING: Tropical Storm Bonnie approaches SC coast

11:00 p.m.Tropical Storm Bonnie formed in the Atlantic with top winds now estimated at 45 mph.

Heavy rain has spread from Charleston down to Savannah.

Meanwhile a few showers are in the extreme SE portion of the Charlotte area.

A Tropical Storm warning is in effect for the entire South Carolina coast.

The storm will make landfall near Edisto Beach South of Charleston and meander parallel to the coastline, reaching the Outer Banks by late Memorial day. This puts the biggest threat for heavy rain in Charlotte Sunday.

The rain will come at us in waves, with the biggest opportunity for heavy rain coming during the late afternoon. This could bring an impact to racing tomorrow.

Severe weather is not expected and any rain that falls will be brief but heavy.

Heaviest rains will remain just East of Charlotte in places like Florence and Fayetteville.

4:33 p.m.: Tropical Depression 2 upgraded to Tropical Storm Bonnie.

Incoming storm: Tropical Depression 2 is approaching the coast of South Carolina with max winds of 35 mph.

It is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm and head toward the South Carolina coast later Saturday night, bringing in heavy rain and wind gusts. Some of the tropical moisture will head our way over Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday: We will stay sunny and humid this afternoon with highs in the mid-80s. Some downpours will push through the eastern counties late Saturday afternoon, and eventually will push through Charlotte.

Rain chances: Expect periods of rain throughout the day Sunday. Rain chances will be highest on Sunday, but as of now we are not expecting a wash-out. Rain will eventually wind down Sunday night, which could mean better news for the Coca-Cola 600.

Memorial Day: The holiday forecast now looks to be much more positive. We will see partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid-80s. A few afternoon downpours are possible, but the forecast still looks hopeful for your outdoor plans.

Work week: An unsettled pattern returns by mid-week and highs remain in the mid-80s.
