Tropics update: Tame in Atlantic, with wild start to season in Pacific

CHARLOTTE, N.C — As we head into the second half of July, tropical conditions in the Atlantic look to stay fairly quiet. So far this year, there have been four named storms in the Atlantic, which started with Hurricane Alex, a pre-season storm that developed in January.

It has been more active in the Pacific so far this season, with already five named storms. Currently, Tropical Storms Darby and Estelle are spinning west of Mexico. Darby may make a run for the Hawaiian Islands this weekend, but is not expected to intensify into a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring two disturbances closer to the southwest Mexican coast that will likely intensify through the rest of the work week.

It is still fairly early in the hurricane season, which officially started June 1. The 2016 Hurricane Outlook by NOAA predicts:

  • 10-16 named storms
  • 4-8 hurricanes
  • 1-4 major hurricanes

Hurricane season continues through the end of November, typically peaking between mid-August and mid-October.
