US Postal Service letter carriers to pick up food donations May 9

Channel 9 is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers to help fight hunger in our community through the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On Saturday, May 9, you can help provide food for your neighbors in need by leaving a bag or box of nonperishable food at your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up.

The Stamp Out Hunger drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect food donations from generous postal customers.

“It really touches you,” said Beverly Gentry, a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier. “We can help each other, and this is a way for our carriers to give back to the community.”

For the past 25 years, the drive has delivered more than 1 billion pounds of food to local community food banks, pantries and shelters.

Your food donation will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and over 700 shelters, soup kitchens and pantries that receive food from the organization, including Loaves and Fishes.

Additionally, you can help support Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and other partner agencies by donating canned or nonperishable food items to the 9 Food Drive from May 11 to June 7 at any Ashley HomeStore, Showmars or E.R. Plumbing Services.

For the past 15 years, WSOC-TV’s 9 Food Drive has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in hopes of ending hunger for the hundreds of thousands of people in our area living in need.
