Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. They provide a regional distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies that assist people in need.
Children at risk of hunger in the Metrolina region is not just a myth, it’s a reality. 18.3% of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina’s service area population lives in poverty, including almost 220,000 children and seniors. Children at the greatest risk of hunger are those who are in deep, persistent poverty.
SHFBM provides food for over 700 partner agencies including soup kitchens like Urban Ministries, emergency pantries like Loaves and Fishes, residential care facilities like Florence Crittenton, homeless shelters like the Uptown Men’s Shelter, senior programs like Adult Care and Share Center, and low income children’s programs like A Better World.
In fiscal year 2013-2014, SHFBM distributed over 45 million pounds of food and other essential grocery products throughout a 19 county service region. North Carolina counties served include Anson, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly and Union. As well as five South Carolina counties including Lancaster, York, Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee.
