“I’m hoping to gain a lifelong friendship and relationship from this experience.”
For the past two years, Conner Flynn has been volunteering with Big Brother Big Sisters as a mentor for 12-year-old CJ Nail.
Twice a month, the pair bond through various activities around the Charlotte area - creating memories that both hope will last a lifetime.
“It’s been really fun being able to go out and do different activities to grow our relationship,” said Flynn. We see lots of movies, play basketball, go to the trampoline park and do community service.”
BBBS aims to help every child achieve success by making matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. The positive relationships developed between Bigs and Littles are designed to have a lasting effect on the child’s life.
Flynn expressed the impact CJ has had on his life and encouraged others to consider joining the program as a Big.
“Getting involved in BBBS provides exposure to the troubles and difficulties that many families and young children face in their day-to-day lives in this community,” said Flynn. “I can attest that it is just as rewarding being a big.”
Flynn is a member of the BBBS Young Professional Leadership Council. The council is dedicated to supporting the organization’s mission and raising awareness in the community through promotional events.
On Saturday, YPLC will host “A Big Night Out” at 8 p.m. at 8.2.0, located in the AvidXchange Music Factory at 820 Hamilton St., Charlotte.
The fundraising event will provide the opportunity for young professionals in the Charlotte area to support the needs of youth who greatly benefit from nationally recognized evidence-based, one-on-one mentoring programs.
“Meet members of our council [YPLC] as well as other Bigs to learn about the benefits of joining the program and why we are looking for more matches,” said Flynn.
The event will be set in a masquerade theme and feature an evening filled with music, dancing and fun. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served and attendees will have the option to participate in a silent auction to benefit the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas.
