• Sheriff's office collects school supplies through 'Deputy Do Write'

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is joining the growing movement to help collect school supplies to assist area students through the 9 School Tools program. “It’s helping kids right here in our community, and it helps our teachers,” Irwin Carmichael, Mecklenburg County Sheriff, said.

From now until August 20, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, asks you to donate school supplies through their 9 School Tools' “Deputy Do Write” program.  While most of what the office will collect is writing tools like, pencils, pens and paper, they will accept all types of school supplies; backpacks, folders, glue sticks and rulers, etc.

“It’s so important that kids have the school supplies they need, so they can be great students,” Carmichael said. “It really goes a long way to help teachers and students right here in our community.”

For the past 20 years, in partnership with Communities in Schools Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Classroom Central, WSOC-TV collects school supplies, which are then distributed to students in grades K-12. These items play a big role in preparing students to be successful in the upcoming school year.

Carmichael said that donating school supplies for children in need will enable them to be better prepared for the classroom.  “I want kids to be prepared,” Carmichael said. “We want to create an environment of success and provide the tools for the kids to succeed.”

The sheriff said that participation is easy.  “The next time you’re in the store just picking up something as simple as a pack of paper, or pencils, anything, that it can really make a difference,” Carmichael said.

The 9 School Tools program covers 22 counties and is the largest school supply drive in the Carolinas. Over the past 20 years, 9 School Tools has been able to serve over 3 million students.

From now until Aug. 20, you can donate school supplies at over 80 donation locations across the Carolinas.  You can find your nearest donation location by clicking on this link 9 School Tools Donation Locations.

You can also donate school supplies at forty WSOC-TV 9 Family Focus partner locations: Showmars, Ashley HomeStore, Hendrick Honda or E.R. Plumbing Services.
