Sorority hosts 9 Food Drive collection to feed those in need

For the past five years, the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated has collected hundreds of pounds of food for the 9 Food Drive to help feed local families in need.

On Saturday, the chapter will hold a special collection from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Delta Center at 5408 Beatties Ford Road. The women are encouraging community members to come by and donate canned and nonperishable food.

“Feeding the hungry and taking care of children in our community is important to us,” said Debra Obanner, chapter member. “It’s what we do.”

For the past 14 years, WSOC-TV has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to help end hunger in our area during the 9 Food Drive. Over 700 shelters, soup kitchens and pantries receive food from Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Because the Food Bank supplies food and essential grocery items to hundreds of agencies, a monetary donation helps all of these organizations. For every $1 the food bank receives, they distribute 7 pounds of food. You can donate now by clicking on this link.

You can also donate canned and nonperishable food items now through June 9 at any Ashley HomeStore, Showmars and E.R. Plumbing Services. Find a donation location near you by following this link.
