5 new books you won't want to miss this week, including Debbie Macomber's beach read

1. "Cottage by the Sea" by Debbie Macomber (Ballantine, fiction, on sale July 17)

What it's about: A woman whose life is rocked by tragedy finds solace in her childhood vacation town of Oceanside and a friendship with the local handyman.

The buzz: "A gentle, sweet beach read," says Booklist.

2. "Give Me Your Hand" by Megan Abbott (Little, Brown, fiction, on sale July 17)

What it's about: A decade after a secret destroyed their high school friendship, two female research scientists find themselves competing in the same lab in this thriller.

The buzz: AMC has optioned "Give Me Your Hand" for development as a TV series.

3. "When They Go Low, We Go High" by Philip Collins (Overlook, nonfiction, on sale July 17)

What it's about: Subtitle: "Speeches That Shape the World and Why We Need Them."

The buzz: With a title inspired by Michelle Obama, this book looks at famous (and infamous) speeches by historical figures such as Lincoln, Churchill, Hitler, Mandela and yes, the Obamas.

4. "Baby Teeth" by Zoje Stage (St. Martin's Press, fiction, on sale July 17)

What it's about: Debut psychological thriller about a "bad seed," a mute 7-year-old girl who loves her daddy but wants to kill her mother.

The buzz: "Deliciously creepy," says Library Journal in a starred review.

5. "The Sinners" by Ace Atkins (Putnam, fiction, on sale July 17)

What it's about: In the latest in the Quinn Colson series, the Mississippi county sheriff juggles his impending wedding with a war between drug dealers and human traffickers.

The buzz: Atkins now writes the late Robert B. Parker's Spenser series; "Old Black Magic" hit No. 18 on USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list in May.
