'Hamilton' duo presents Bob Fosse/Gwen Verdon FX show with Sam Rockwell, Michelle Williams

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail, who teamed on the Tony-winning "Hamilton," are joining forces for an FX limited series on choreographer and filmmaker Bob Fosse and legendary dancer Gwen Verdon that will star Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams.

FX announced Tuesday that the eight-episode, untitled Fosse/Verdon project, will star Rockwell ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri") as Fosse and Williams ("Manchester by the Sea," "Brokeback Mountain," "Cabaret") as Verdon.

Steven Levenson, who won a Tony for "Dear Evan Hansen," will write the first episode, with Kail, who directed Miranda's acclaimed "Hamilton," directing the premiere. The limited series is based on Sam Wasson's biography, "Fosse."

Actress, dancer and producer Nicole Fosse, the daughter of Fosse and Verdon, will serve as co-executive producer. Production will begin in the fall, with a 2019 premiere planned.

According to the FX description, the series "tells the story of the singular romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. He was a visionary filmmaker and one of theater’s most influential choreographers and directors, she was the greatest Broadway dancer of all time. Together they changed the face of American entertainment — at a perilous cost."

The project, which will feature Fosse's choreography, will explore "the hidden corners of show business, the price of pursuing greatness, and the suffering inflicted in the name of art."

“We are over the moon about this dream team we’ve assembled for this incredible series,” FX Networks program chief Nick Grad said in a statement. “Tommy, Steven, and Lin are the perfect team to tell the story of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, and we’re so thrilled to have Sam and Michelle playing these iconic roles.”

Miranda, Kail and Levenson issued a joint statement: "Bob Fosse ignited a revolution in American dance, theater, and film. But, in contrast to the well-worn myth of the visionary artist working in solitude, Fosse’s work would not have been possible without Gwen Verdon, the woman who helped to mold his style — and make him a star.”

Nicole Fosse added, "My mother and father have one of the greatest love stories ever known. They were extremely complex people with an indestructible bond, loyalty, and trust that endured both fantasy and reality. Finally, we have a creative team with the talent and wisdom to tell the story."
