2 gators removed, killed on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — (AP) An alligator that ate a dog and another gator that had a plastic flying disc around its neck have been captured and destroyed on Hilton Head Island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that one of the alligators, weighing about 600 pounds, was removed from a gated community on Labor Day night after it ate a dog.

The second gator was spotted Tuesday by someone vacationing on the island. Alligator wranglers were able to catch it Wednesday afternoon.

Joe Maffo with Critter Management said someone might have put the ring around the gator's neck.

The 9-foot gator was destroyed because it was too large to be returned to the area where it was caught.
