2 shootings in 3 days have students, residents near UNCC on edge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in Charlotte say a shooting that sent a 19-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition Monday evening started with an altercation at a nearby convenience store.

Capt. Brian Foley said people in two cars began arguing at a 7-Eleven at University City Boulevard and Pavilion Boulevard Monday afternoon, and witnesses said the two groups got into their cars and left, but the argument wasn’t over.

“Individuals in this second car fired rounds into the first vehicle, and one of those rounds penetrated the back of the car and struck the victim, who was a backseat passenger in the back,” Foley said.

He said the victims in the case were not cooperating with police officers or detectives, but police do not believe the people in the second car knew the victim or others in her car.

They are hoping surveillance pictures from that convenience store will help them identify the car from where the shots were fired.

Foley said it does not appear to be related to two other shootings in the area near UNC Charlotte over the last week, including one Saturday night that sent a student to the hospital.

Police do not have suspects in any of those shootings, and while the shootings did not happen on campus, University of North Carolina at Charlotte police are warning students and staff to be on guard.

“You have to be cognizant of your surroundings. You have to be careful,” said UNC Charlotte Police Chief Jeff Baker.
