• 3 accidents on I-85; 1 fatal

    KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - North Carolina Highway Patrol confirms three separate accidents on Interstate 85 in Kannapolis on Friday afternoon.

    One resulted in a fatality.

    Two vehicles were traveling together southbound on Interstate 85. The driver of the second vehicle was trying to catch up with the first.

    They hit heavy traffic, and the second vehicle rear ended the other.

    The second vehicle then spun out of control, crossed the median and hit a tractor-trailer head-on.

    The two people in the second vehicle were thrown out and onto the interstate, and one died.

    Neither person was wearing a seat belt.

    The interstate was shut down near exit 60, Dale Earnhardt Blvd. The interstate is back open.

    Eyewitness News Chopper 9 showed miles of traffic back-up.
