Residents complain their trash isn't getting picked up

CHARLOTTE, NC — Viewers have been complaining to Action 9 about the private garbage company Liberty Waste Services.

A dozen customers emailed Action 9 as of Friday.  They claimed "3 weeks with no pickup," "they just stopped coming," "non-service" for more than 2 months, "excuses," "no explanations," and "have not returned my calls."

Angela Thompson says Liberty was supposed to pick up her trash on Wednesdays.  When Action 9 met her, she'd been waiting three weeks. She eventually said Liberty finally picked it up a month late.

"I feel nasty because this looks bad," she said.  "This is unacceptable.  I mean, I pay for a garbage service.  If you're not going to provide it, then I'm not going to pay you."

Joe Miello owns Liberty and agreed to go camera.  He said he ran into one obstacle after another recently.  He said thieves stole batteries out of 12 of his trucks and that some of his workers quit.  So, he's driving some routes himself and giving refunds.  He showed Action 9 the police report for the batteries and the canceled checks to the customers.

"I'm trying to make up for it.  I'm running the trucks myself right now.  And doing what I can to make sure the garbage gets up off the ground," Miello said.

Now, Action 9 found out, Active Waste Solutions is buying the business.  The owner emailed Action 9 he's "under contract to purchase Liberty."  Miello confirmed it and said me he plans to keep making things right until they close the deal.

A number of these customers tell Action 9, they signed up for automatic withdrawal.  So, it has been harder for them to stop paying in protest.  No matter what company you use, if you have the option to pay with credit card, you should.  It's easier to dispute charges.
