CMS leaders meet to discuss student assignment plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Leaders with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools met to discuss the district’s student assignment plan Thursday -- a plan that would impact thousands of students.

It is aimed at increasing diversity and improving student's academic success and Thursday’s meeting was one of several taking place to discuss student reassignment.

The board will be working to finalize the guiding principles and a parents’ survey about reassignment. Channel 9 has learned that some of the information the committee is using to make their decision is based on that survey.

The survey, which will go out to parents, students and residents, will ask questions like, “rank your top three reasons for selecting a CMS school.”

The district is trying to choose between three different options, including expanding home and magnet schools, students attending a school choice near their homes, or re-drawing boundaries to achieve more diversity.

The committee will continue to work on the draft Thursday morning, with the final survey set to go out sometime in January.
