CMS reviews student assignment plan in effort to boost diversity

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 will be following developments Thursday that will impact where thousands of students go to school.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board committee will review its student assignment plan Thursday morning in an effort to increase diversity and improve student's academic success.

They'll continue to look at different student assignment options after they laid out three different plans during their last meeting.

The first would be to build on the foundation of home and magnet schools. The board would make the effort to minimize high concentrations of low-income families and high concentrations of low-performing students.

The second plan would give students a chance to attend a school choice near their home. The school would need various instructional models to help students learn.

The final plan would re-draw school boundaries to make schools more diverse.

One of the plans would also make sure schools are economically diverse. About 50 percent of CMS students are considered economically disadvantaged.

The policy would limit any school from having more than 60 percent at that level.

The meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. but no questions will be taken from those attending.
