• One dead after small plane crashes in Union County

UNION COUNTY, N.C. - A small plane crashed in a wooded area in Union County Monday killing the pilot.

The FAA said it was an amateur-built aircraft. The crash happened along Jaars Road around 2:20 p.m.

The pilot was the only person on board, according to the FAA.

Witnesses said the pilot was attempting to take off from the runway at JAARS-Townsend Airport and it went wrong from the start.

One man said nothing about the takeoff looked normal. The pilot managed to get the plane over the airport before banking sharply and plunging nose-down into the woods, the man said.
