• Hickory couple celebrates major milestone: Their 80th anniversary

    HICKORY, N.C. - One couple in Hickory is celebrating a milestone that very few people reaching: Their 80th wedding anniversary.

    Mike and Theresa Bennett were married during the Great Depression. Mike was 18 years old and Theresa was 16 years old when they said, “I do” back in 1937.

    “The priest said, ‘You’re so young, you’re only 16.’ And I said, ‘Father, I’m 16 and a half,’” Theresa Bennett said.

    “What attracted you to her?” reporter Dave Faherty asked Mike Bennett.

    “I felt very great toward her. She was the prettiest girl in town,” Mike Bennett answered.

    The couple met at a church function where Mike Bennett played the trombone in the band. Back then he said he was making only $15 a week working at a paper mill.

    Faherty asked the couple what’s the secret behind their long and happy marriage.

    “It wasn’t money. We didn’t have money. We just fell in love and never stopped,” the couple said.

    The two make sure to play cards every day.

    Mike Bennett said he knew the day he set eyes on his wife that she was the one.

    The two shared a message for anyone who wants their love to last.

    “I just think it’s easier than a lot of people realize. All you have to do is just give a little,” Theresa Bennett said.

    This Thanksgiving, Mike Bennett was admitted to the hospital.  Sadly, he passed away a few days later – just one day before his 99th birthday.  As always, his love, Theresa, was near his side.
