Hundreds Get Rear In Gear

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — More than a thousand people got their rears in gear at Charlotte's Independence Park on Saturday, all to support colon cancer research and awareness.

An estimated 1,600 runners and walkers took part in the "Get Your Rear In Gear 5k," a fundraiser for the Colon Cancer Coalition. Organizers said 75 percent of all the money donated would stay locally to help with education about colorectal cancer and to pay for screenings for the uninsured.

"Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers out there, and that is due in part by the colonoscopy screening process," said Susan Falco, the local event director. "It's very important that everyone be screened."

Last year was the events first year in Charlotte. Similar races are held in 37 cities around the country, including Raleigh and Winston-Salem.
