1 arrested after man robbed, shot in legs while pumping gas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested one man and are looking for several more suspects after they said a man was shot overnight at a north Charlotte gas station.

Officers were called around 2:40 a.m. to the Shell station on Sunset Road, right off Interstate 77, and found, Timothy Belcher, who had been shot in both legs.

He was rushed to the hospital but authorities said he will survive.

Investigators told Channel 9 that Belcher had just finished pumping gas and got into his car when he was approached by several men, at least one of them armed with a handgun.

The suspects robbed Belcher before shooting him in the legs, according to investigators.

Officers said some of the suspects fled in vehicles, while at least one ran from the scene.

Police brought in a K-9 unit, and officers were able to track down Jequii Kennedy.

He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of stolen property.

“I worry about that every day. I mean, it's getting worse and worse every day in Charlotte," resident Alicia Brooks said.

There have been 35 crimes within a few blocks of the shooting over the last six months, according to crime reports.

They include two assaults and another robbery in July.

Some aren't surprised by what happened there Monday morning.

"Am I surprised?” resident Mark Danza asked. “Not really, unfortunately. I wish I was, but I’m not."

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
