Pedestrian hit and killed by multiple cars Independence Blvd

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a pedestrian fatality that happened near the 2100 block of East Independence Boulevard.

Police said a 23-year-old man, whose name hasn't been released yet, died after he was hit by several cars around 3:45 a.m.

Investigators said the crash happened in the inbound lanes as the pedestrian was trying to cross the street in a section that was marked "No pedestrian crossing."

According to police, a 1992 Jeep Cherokee hit the pedestrian, who was thrown into the center lane of traffic and hit by at least two other vehicles and a tractor trailer.

None of the drivers were injured in the accident. Investigators don't believe the drivers were speeding or using alcohol.

The driver of a 1999 Volkswagon Jetta did leave the scene on foot after striking the concrete barrier.

Police shut down the westbound lanes of Independence at Eastway Drive around 4 a.m. to clear the accident scene. The road reopened shortly after 7:30 a.m.

The Major Crash Unit is investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-336-8862.
