17-year-old killed in shooting, crash in Gaston Co.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — On Saturday night, police thought they were responding to a car accident in Gaston County, but when they arrived to West Garrison Boulevard, they realized that someone had been shot.

Eyewitness News was told 17-year-old Brandon Heath McCall was shot and killed on Saturday night.

Eyewitness News spoke with two witnesses, Betty and Stephanie Rhyne, who live on West Garrison Boulevard. They came out when they heard the screech of the car and then one of them realized she goes to school with the victim.

Betty called the police.

"I told them there was a wreck," she said. "I didn't know the boy had been shot until the first police officer got on scene. Then I heard people saying there's a bullet hole, there's a bullet hole."

That's when Stephanie realized her classmate had been shot and was in the car.

"You could just see him shaking in the car," she said. That was what was so pitiful and sad."

"I held his head so he wouldn't break his neck," Betty said. "I was hollering his name out, telling him he would be OK."

McCall was a senior at Hunter Huss High School.
