1 killed in single-engine plane crash in western North Carolina

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. — One person was killed Saturday afternoon when a single-engine, homebuilt Velocity aircraft crashed in western North Carolina, ABC affiliate WLOS reported.

Crews responded to the plane crash near the Western Carolina Regional Airport near Andrews, Cherokee County, the North Carolina Highway Patrol told WLOS.

The plane crashed shortly after take-off.

The crash is under investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent WLOS the following statement:

“The preliminary information available currently is that a Homebuilt Velocity aircraft impacted a field on departure from Western Carolina Regional Airport near Andrews, North Carolina about 12 PM EDT.”
