CHARLOTTE — An 18-wheeler hauling crushed cars and scrap overturned and caught fire, forcing a busy interstate ramp to shut down in northeast Charlotte at about 10 a.m. Thursday.

Chopper 9 flew over the crash on the Interstate 85 South ramp to Interstate 485 inner loop in northeast Charlotte, where the truck was on its side surrounded by the flattened vehicles.

Motorists could see a plume of smoke miles away from the crash.
Paramedics said there were minor injuries in the wreck.
At 11 a.m., the Charlotte Fire Department tweeted the ramp will be closed for an extended amount of time and for motorists to seek alternate routes.
