Officers were called just before 8 a.m. to the wreck on Eastway Drive at North Tryon Street.

Police said Alicia McFarland and her child died in the crash, and three others were hurt, two of them seriously.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including a black truck that was hauling a food truck and ran off the road.

A badly damaged white car was also involved, as was a van that flipped on its side.

Police said 22-year-old Montressa Gray was traveling northeast on Eastway Drive towards North Tryon Street in the right-hand lane when she sideswiped the truck.

The truck then hit McFarland's car.

A neighbor told Channel 9 he heard what sounded like gunshots and ran out to the devastating scene in front of his yard.

"I'm just kind of messed up right now, and that little boy just messed me up because that could've been one of my grandchildren, my sons, my daughters," Davis said. "It could've been me or my wife."

The intersection of Eastway Drive and North Tryon Street was closed for several hours while police investigated.

“That little kid you know, that kid did nothing wrong and he's gone,” Davis said. “He don't even have a chance to make a difference.”
