2 staff members hospitalized after crash at South Stanly Middle School

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — Two staff members were seriously injured at a Stanly County school when they were hit by an SUV being backed up by another employee.

Emergency crews responded to the crash Thursday morning at South Stanly Middle School, school district officials say.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot when a driver reportedly ran into several staff members.

A teacher and a custodian were taken to the hospital and are recovering from serious injuries. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

The driver, who is also a teacher, was cited.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the school and could see state troopers investigating.

"It's shocking, especially at the beginning of the school year," Highway Patrol Trooper Gary Beaman said.

Staff members were preparing for the start of the year, according to the school district.

There was an incident involving a vehicle and two staff members, who were moving a bookshelf, district officials said in a news release.

Linscott Weiker, 52, was backing her 2017 Toyota Rav4 into the loading dock, troopers said.

Two of her co-workers were going to help her unload books when the crossover SUV suddenly accelerated in reverse.

"The vehicle backed into a rail in a loading dock and struck a 54-year-old teacher and a 52-year-old custodian," Beaman said.

They had leg injuries and the custodian was airlifted to Atrium-Main in Charlotte.

The teacher got a concussion.

Weiker was cited for unsafe movement. She said her accelerator got stuck.

"No malice,” Beaman said. “No ill intent here. We'll find out if it was human error, or if there was a problem with the vehicle."

Troopers said they tried to replicate the malfunction at the scene but couldn't. The vehicle was taken to a Toyota dealership to be checked out.
