2 taken to hospital after head-on crash in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Emergency workers responded to head-on crash that shut down a busy road in east Charlotte Sunday afternoon.

Just before 2 p.m. and Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer noticed a gold Ford Taurus driving erratically on Kilborne Drive. According to a police release, that officer activated his lights and siren in an attempt to pull the driver over.

But instead of stopping, the driver of the Taurus sped away.

According to police, the pursuing officer immediately deactivated his lights and siren and disengaged from the pursuit.

A short time after that, the officer watched as the Taurus crossed the double-yellow line and hit a Nissan Sentra head-on.

The road was shut down at Kilborne Dr. and Endfield Rd. while firefighters worked to free two people from the wreckage.

Those two were transported to an area trauma center. Their conditions are unknown.

Investigators said criminal charges are pending and the incident is also being reviewed by the Internal Affairs Bureau to ensure that all department policies and procedures were followed.

The conditions of those hospitalized have not been released.
