CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 has learned that a veteran Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer and school resource officer has died.
Over the weekend, sources told Channel 9 Officer Michael Rorie was at work but wasn’t feeling well over the weekend and went home. He then went into some kind of distress and could not be revived.
The department has not released a cause of death at this point.
He was a 20-year veteran of the force and also worked as a resource officer at Piedmont Open Middle School. CMPD said Rorie was a great mentor to the students at the school.
“He was always smiling,” principal Jackie Barone said. “He was here for the kids.”
She became the principal at the school the same year Rorie started as an SRO.
“We were with him on Friday,” Barone said. “He was here. He was smiling. We were doing our thing and for this to happen, it’s just surreal.”
Rorie was building a community of hope in the hallways and in the hearts of students.
“He was a mentor for years for so many kids, so he really gave a positive presence behind a police officer,” Barone said.
“Mike and I worked hand in hand,” CMPD Officer Wes Caldwell said. “He was my back up. I’m his back up.”
Caldwell has been an SRO at the school, and he was Rorie’s friend.
“It’s just unbelievable that he’s passed on,” Caldwell said.
“The Charlotte Fire Department would like to send our deepest condolence to CMPD for the unexpected loss of one of their officers. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time,” the fire department wrote on Twitter.
