29-story high-rise under construction in Charlotte's skyline

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new high-rise is being constructed in uptown Charlotte.

The 29-story tower, with mixed use of office space and apartments, is being constructed off Graham Street, near Bank of America Stadium and BB&T Ballpark.

The building will be anchored by First National Bank Corporation.

“There's a tremendous opportunity for us to attract talent because this is a great market for financial institutions,” said Vincent Delie, president and CEO of FNB Corporation.

The high-rise will be an addition to Bank of America and Wells Fargo in Charlotte’s skyline.

The building will also have 196 luxury apartments, along with office and retail space, and eight floors of garage parking.

Charlotte Center City Partners CEO Michael Smith said the $129 million investment is adding to uptown's growth.

“This is a forward-moving project that allows us to pull more of our employment off Tryon Street and create that three-dimensional downtown,” Smith said.

Currently, there's a lot of space under construction and planned, including 4.6 million square feet of office space, 449,000 square feet of retail and 3,513 apartments.

Smith said there are big plans, specifically for Graham Street, which will see many changes over the next few years.

“This is part of our city that has new vibrancy, two blocks away from a streetcar line that will open first quarter 2020, and recapitalization of the Panthers and the aspirations they have for this hospitality corridor,” Smith said.

Construction will take about 24 months, so officials expect the building will be up and operational in 2021.

First National Bank is also currently building a 22-story tower in Raleigh that is set to be completed by the end of the year.

The company has about 100,000 employees in North Carolina.
