Police: 4-year-old accidentally shot herself after finding gun

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 4-year-old’s mother has been charged after police say the girl found a gun and accidentally shot herself.

Investigators said the girl found the gun in her mother’s bedroom Monday evening and somehow shot herself.

Marsharier Littlejohn, the 4-year-old's mother, is charged with failing to secure a firearm. Police said they are still looking for the mother’s boyfriend, 30-year-old Leandre Budden, who is also charged with failing to secure a gun.

Police haven't said where the child was shot, but did say that her injuries are not life-threatening.

Tuesday morning, Eyewitness News spoke with a neighbor who said she knows Littlejohn and her daughter but hadn't heard about the shooting.

“Oh, yeah, she's a great woman,” the neighbor said. “I mean, she's really nice, really sweet. And I always see her with her daughter, and she's always walking the dog. That had to be a horrible mistake.”
