5-year-old flown to hospital after head-on collision in Iredell County, mom charged

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A woman has been charged after her 5-year-old was flown to the hospital following a head-on collision Tuesday morning in Iredell County.

The crash happened around 7:25 a.m. on Oswalt Amity Road near Arthurs Road in the Troutman area.

Officials said a MEDEVAC helicopter was called to the scene to take the child to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after a car the child was riding in collided with another vehicle head-on.

According to state troopers, 43-year-old Suzanne Stewart was heading west in a Chevrolet Malibu when she crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Ford Escape.

Stewart and the other driver were both taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with serious injuries. Stewart’s 5-year-old daughter was also seriously injured and flown to the hospital in Charlotte.

Everyone was wearing seatbelts, according to the Highway Patrol.

Troopers charged Stewart with driving while impaired, felony serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and child abuse. They said alcohol does not appear to be involved but the results of a blood test for drug impairment are pending.

Firefighters shut down a portion of the roadway for nearly two hours as the troopers investigated.

Channel 9 learned there have been several crashes on the same stretch of road. Neighbors said it’s because of a big curve along Oswalt Amity Road.
