• 71 sickened from salmonella connected to church fundraiser

    CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. - On Saturday night health officials are continuing to interview people who ate Salmonella-tainted barbecue from a Shelby Church.

    Cleveland County officials told Eyewitness News that 71 people were sickened and that number could climb.

    Thirteen of those people were hospitalized.

    The outbreak has been linked to a fundraiser at Sandy Plains Baptist Church on Sept. 7.

    The church sold 5,000 plates.
