MONROE, N.C. — A Union County man was drunk when he hit and killed a Monroe man who was on his way home Friday morning, according to North Caroling Highway Patrol troopers.
Troopers said 25-year-old Robert David Jones admitted he'd been drinking at a friend's house and was driving 80 mph on Highway 601 when he hit the pickup truck driven by 45-year-old Michael Wayne Aycoth. The truck was knocked into the median.
"It's just unfortunate -- unfortunate that something could have been avoided, but speed and alcohol played a part in this collision," said Trooper Will Winchester.
Jones is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony death by vehicle.
He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.
