Man accused of killing mom in Winston-Salem, abducting kids arrested in Pineville

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is in custody after police said he kidnapped his four biological children from Winston-Salem after killing his mother.

Troopers and police caught 33-year-old Jacob Jones at a gas station along Johnston Road in Pineville early Sunday morning after a chase through the Charlotte area.

Winston-Salem police issued an Amber Alert for one of Jones’ children, 10-year-old Azaria Walters, late Saturday night.

Officials said they found Jones’ mother, 68-year-old Rosalyn Howard, stabbed to death before 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

They said Jones took off with the children in a black Cadillac Escalade with North Carolina registration RAX-1187. Police said he does not have custody of the children.

Police found Jones in Pineville after 1 a.m., and the Amber Alert for Walters was canceled shortly after Jones was taken into custody. Jones was arrested for an outstanding robbery warrant connected to the incident.

On Sunday, Jones was charged with murder in the death of his mother while in custody in Mecklenburg County. He will be taken to Forsyth County later.

Officials said all four children were found safe and released to a guardian.
