American Airlines eases baggage policy, lowers prices on some items

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines is easing restrictions on its baggage policy and will no longer charge extra for some oversize sports and music equipment.

The rule change was effective starting Tuesday. Previously, American Airlines Group Inc. customers paid $150 one-way to check specialty equipment, like a surfboard.

Now, they’ll pay the normal $30 fee a customer pays for a checked bag if the item is under 50 pounds.

“Based on feedback from our customers and American team members, American is eliminating the charge for common oversize sports and music equipment,” the airline said.

The policy change doesn’t cover all specialty items, as American said things like antlers, hang gliders, scuba tanks and kite/windsurfing equipment will still incur a $150 charge.
