Family Dollar employee has wedding rings taken at gunpoint

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An armed robber stole a Family Dollar employee’s wedding rings when he held up the store over the weekend, police said.

Latrecia Marzette said she thought she was going to be shot inside the store on West Boulevard on Saturday. She is a mother of three and has been married for 10 years.

"I didn't want to give them up, but rings aren't my life," Marzette said.

The robbery happened at 8:30 a.m.

"When I turned around, the guy was there with a gun,” Marzette said. “The first thing he told me was to open the safe."

The safe was on a timer and couldn’t be opened, so the gunman stole her rings instead.

"I knew I couldn't get that safe open, and he came in mask, gloves,” she said. "We live in a crazy world, and I felt like he was ready for anything, so that's all."

It was the second time Marzette had been robbed while working at the same store. A few months ago, the same thing happened in broad daylight. Although her husband wanted her to quit, she wanted to stay out of loyalty to her boss and friend.

Following the latest incident, Marzette said she quit her job and won't go back to the Family Dollar.

She would like to get her rings back but told Channel 9 she is just happy to be alive.
