HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. — Wildlife officials in western North Carolina are asking residents to be on alert while crews track down a bear that has had a jar stuck on its head for a month.
People reported seeing the bear in Henderson County and posted about it on social media.
The bear appears to be very thin and officials said it hasn't eaten in several weeks.
Authorities believe it's been able to stay alive by filling the jar with water.
Carolyn Elisius said she spotted the bear recently and screamed for help, not out of fear for herself, but for the bear's safety.
"I really hope that the community can come together, and if you spot the bear you're not supposed to do anything other than call wildlife management and keep your eye on it," said Elisius.
Wildlife officials are using drones to try and spot the bear from the air.
North Carolina Wildlife officials said if anyone encounters the bear, don't approach it and call them immediately at 800-662-7137.
