Belk Bowl organizers court possible replacements for main sponsor

Think of the upcoming Belk Bowl as a dress rehearsal. Not for the schools — Kentucky and Virginia Tech — but for organizers seeking a new title sponsor for the annual college football bowl game held in Charlotte.

Danny Morrison, head of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, the nonprofit that runs the bowl game, told CBJ Wednesday that he anticipates hosting prospective sponsors at this year’s event. And, he said, other prospects attended the ACC Football Championship at the NFL stadium last weekend. The game is owned and operated by the Atlantic Coast Conference with promotional support from the foundation.

Referring to retailer Belk’s tenure as title sponsor, Morrison said, “We’re very grateful for the nine-year partnership we’ve had with Belk. They have been a wonderful partner. They have invested in this community, invested in this bowl and have grown it over the past 9 years. They’ve put it in a position so that it is very attractive — we’re getting very good interest from a title sponsorship standpoint.”
