Big South basketball tournament returns with future in Charlotte up in the air

CHARLOTTE — The Big South Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments return this week to Charlotte, beginning with games Wednesday at Bojangles Coliseum. Conference executives told CBJ they’re pleased with initial results — the tournament debuted here last year after Covid-19 wiped out the first year of the current agreement — but what comes next has yet to be determined.

The Big South has its headquarters in Charlotte. The conference is made up of 10 schools, including Winthrop University in Rock Hill and Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs. Games run March 1-5.

“We had a successful tournament last year, the experience for the student-athletes was outstanding,” conference Commissioner Kyle Kallander told CBJ. “We had decent attendance. Going into the original agreement, we wanted to have time over those three years to build the habits of our fans and build a following and build the support in Charlotte.”
